Twitter’s 140 character limit has been something of a controversy since the very beginnings of the social media platform first launched in 2006. While many have enjoyed the challenge of crafting more creative tweets and finding fun ways to get their messages across with great brevity, others have never been pleased with what they see as an incredibly limiting feature. Now the Twitter sphere could be in for a dramatic new change for the new year with the news that there may be a 10,000 character limit launched in the near future.
The social network has been performing rather poorly in the last few years and they’ve lost many users in the process. The resulting state of the Twitter realm is an impressive base number of accounts with an unimpressive percentage of active Twitter users from the overall count. Some of the reasons thought to have contributed to the slowing down of the platform include the complexity of use and competition from other social networks. In the last several months, Twitter has been rolling out a number of changes aimed at turning around the flow of activity on their platform and many have been met with positive feedback.
This week, sources have shared with the media that there a number of major changes on their way to Twitter. It is possible that there will soon be 10,000 character limit tweets that will appear on users’ feeds showing only 140 characters but indicating that there is more to see to allow users to decide if they would like to continue reading such tweets. Twitter has not confirmed the character limit extensions as yet or other potential new features being buzzed about in the media but Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey did have this say to the press, “as long as it’s consistent with what people want to do, we’re going to explore it.”
Marketing Possibilities on Twitter
10,000 character limit tweets could really open up the doors for being able to better market a greater variety of content on Twitter. Here are a few possibilities…
– You would be able to promote your brand’s blogs by sharing excerpts along with images and a link to the full blog post.
You would be able to say goodbye to cutting down or editing the wittiest or most interesting of your social media copy to be formatted for tweets.
You would have a way to share press or articles in a much more engaging fashion.
Cross-promotional opportunities and the opportunities to network and engage with customers, clients and influencers would also blossom on the platform as you would always be able to share exactly what you wanted to say without self-editing for compatibility.
