Snapchat has proven that it’s far more powerful than a fun pastime for teens. The picture-sharing social media platform is now also home to the accounts of legions of businesses from small businesses to the likes of The Ellen Show, Amazon, Audi and Cover Girl. And although Snapchat is certainly based on images and messaging, video consumption is rapidly increasing for the social app. While daily video views stood at an impressive 4 billion in May of 2015, today Snapchat boasts 10 billion daily video views!
The Success of Snapchat Video Explained…
10 billion daily video views is impressive on its own, but it may be more so for Snapchat as the growing company has 100 million+ users, still quite conservative compared to other top social networks such as Facebook (currently 1.23 billion users). The current status of 10 billion daily video views is a whopping 150% increase in almost one year’s time. However, it must be noted that videos on Snapchat are only up to 10 seconds long. Interestingly, many Snapchat users create threads of these 10 second videos in order to better tell their stories (so-called “snap storms”).
Video is doing amazingly well (and growing) across social media networks as well as elsewhere online. What can we learn from Snapchat? Snapchat’s video success provides strong enough support for marketers to experiment with shorter form videos on other networks as well, even better if the brief clips are shared in a succession, similar to snap storms. The success of these types of campaigns will of course rely on target audiences, products and/or services, branding and other factors. Think about your business and consider if such a social tactic could work for you.
